Honey Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioner

Extra moisturizing ingredients can help improve your locks, naturally.

If you love to experiment with from-nature ingredients in your hair products, this post is for you.

I don’t know about you, but it seems like lately there is more awareness about what’s in hair and beauty products in recent years.

If you read labels, many products now tout “SLS-free, paraben-free, fragrance-free”, and the list goes on. However, even in those products, you can usually find a long list of unrecognizable ingredients.

In the last year, there have even been class-action lawsuits settled against some of the major salon brands, due to products containing the known carcinogen, benzene.

So, what’s a crunchy girl to do? Figure out some better alternatives.

What We Love About DIY Hair Care

I’ve also noticed that every time I find a shampoo or conditioner or other hair product I like, it tends to leave buildup and I am on the hunt for something new after a short time.

The nice thing about making your own hair products is you can adjust the ingredients over time and really customize them for your hair’s needs.

And we can’t fail to mention that making hair products at home is significantly less painful on the wallet!

How to Make Honey Shea Butter Leave-in Conditioner

In this recipe, you will start with shea butter. We’re using the refined version because it results in a smoother end product. Unrefined shea butter can be grainier and smell more strongly.

Raw honey is the next ingredient that you should be able to find in local health food markets, or your neighborhood beekeeper.

I buy local honey as we also use it to combat seasonal allergies. You can also find online sources such as this one that has options by region.

Fractionated coconut oil is something you may have used as a carrier oil for essential oils. It’s pretty easy to find in health food stores or online.

You do not want to use regular refined or unrefined coconut oil as it becomes a solid at room temperature. Fractionated coconut oil will remain a liquid and allow the ingredients to blend more easily.

You can use this recipe as either a leave-in conditioner or a hair mask that you rinse out after 15-30 minutes.

As a conditioner, use only a small amount (1 teaspoon or less, depending on hair length/thickness) and comb through wet hair before styling it.
